MILLINER

HIGHER VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
PROGRAMME 400 CREDITS

An artistic handcraft that stands out

Tillskärarakademin in Gothenburg offers the only Higher Vocational-programme for milliners in Sweden. It is a genuine and creative handcraft, with a tradition that goes far back. A milliner makes hats of all kinds and creates accessories such as bags and gloves.

The programme

The beginning of the programme is focused on different production techniques and on material theory. As a student you will learn to make coiffures and hats in various materials such as straw, felt and fabric. Over time, you will build up your handcrafting skills and your professional efficiency.

You will design and create everything from stylish everyday hats to portable sculptures. You will develop your artistic skills and will get to experiment with materials, forms and techniques.

The programme includes a 4 weeks long internship (LIA) which is an important part of your studies.

Upon completion of the programme, you will be eligible to take an apprenticeship exam as a milliner.

Upon completion of my studies

Once graduated, you can work as a professional milliner, making hats for clients. Accessories are an important part of the programme and apart from headwear you will also be designing, for example, bags, hats and gloves for the fashion – and clothing industry.

Why should I train to become a milliner?

To work as a milliner is an exciting and creative profession that is a lot about creating your own career. You will be able to choose to work directly with clients or at a company.

During the programme, you will learn how to manage your own company and how to build your own career as well as to create a personal brand. Amongst former students from the Milliner-programme, many have decided to start their own companies. Others go abroad, for example to London or Paris, in order to pursue international careers.
